STUDIES ON POSTOPERATIVE PULMONARY COMPLICATIONS
PART II. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
1) An analysis of general conditions, W. B. C. count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, plasma protein and blood gases in partial or total atelectasis of dogs by plugging their bronchi by cotton under bronchoscopy, were performed.
2) The decrease of oxygen saturation of arterial blood was in parallel with the affected area of respirating lung, i.e. with the grade of atelectasis.
3) By injecting intraveneously autosuspension or autoextract of the omentum to the same rabbit will develop bleeding, inflammation, atelectasis and etc. in lungs. And the evident decreass of oxygen saturation of arterial blood were recognized.
4) It ist he future problem how these changes, bleeding, inflammation and etc. relate to atelectasis or pneumonitis.
Conclusion
The author's experiments with co-workers indicate that the postoperative increase of bronchial secretion, the depressed cough-reflex, the plug of mucus, the bacterial multiplication, incidence of lobular or lobar atelectasis and pneumonia, all these factors working together are concerned to be main cause of the postoperative pulmonary complications.
