CANCER STEM CELLS AND THE APPLICATION OF THERAPEUTIC STRATEGIES

Department of Molecular Oncology, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan

Shinji Tanaka

The diversity and heterogeneity of cancer are two of the causes of its intractability. Analogous to so-called stem cells with the ability for self-renewal and pluripotency which are responsible for the diversity of normal tissues, “cancer stem cells” were discovered to exist in malignant tissues over a quarter-century ago. Recent studies on single-cell variability (omics), epigenetic dynamics (bivalency), and metabolic reprogramming (OXPHOS) have elucidated the intrinsic nature of cancer stem cells as well as their ingenious survival tactics that exploit the immune evasion system in vivo. Based on advanced research targeting cancer stem cells, we are developing various therapeutic strategies.
