FLEXIBLE PLANNING FOR HOSPITAL PREPAREDNESS AND MAINTENANCE DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has continued since January 2020 in Japan, and medical institutions are required to accept infectious patients whose numbers increase and decrease in waves, while avoiding the collapse of the normal medical care system. Flexible planning to prepare for hospitalized care of COVID-19 patients and to maintain hospital functions is needed to achieve this. Based on our experience, we introduce a strategy for establishing rules regarding the space for the treatment of infected and uninfected patients, staff rearrangements, and system construction to continue hospital operations safely and efficiently. The prearranged rules prevent confusion of medical fronts and reduce the burden on staff at the scene. The rules need reevaluation and revision depending on trends in the pandemic, the latest scientific findings, and feasibility.
