WHAT YOUNG TRAINEES ARE AIMING FOR

Department of Pediatric and Congenital Cardiovascular Surgery, Jichi Children’s Medical Center Tochigi, Shimotsuke, Japan

Norihiko Oka

Although many problems have been pointed out regarding the training of pediatric cardiac surgeons, no clear actions have been taken. Most young people enter this field with strong will and motivation. However, because a solid training method has not been established, the motivation of trainees declines along the way, and there have been many cases in which trainees have given up the path. Others seek training and spend a lot of money and time to qualify for overseas training.
A training program led by the Japanese Society of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery was introduced. The introduction of such a program was the first attempt to establish fair, transparent evaluation criteria and to ensure that trainees are properly supervised. This could lead to the development of a stable system for training surgeons by reducing future variations in educational content and evaluation methods among institutions. This report discusses how instructors have responded to what trainees are aiming for, what the problems in the responses are, and what should be done in the future based on the opinions of young trainees.
