PROPOSAL OF A NOVEL STANDARD FOR ACADEMIC MEETINGS IN THE NEW ERA BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF THE FIRST VIRTUAL ANNUAL MEETING OF THE JAPAN SURGICAL SOCIETY

Department of Surgery, Keio University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan

Yuko Kitagawa, Hideaki Obara

The 120th annual meeting of the Japan Surgical Society was held in the virtual mode due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although some issues remain, including limitations on interactive discussions, the overall accessibility and actual number of participants significantly increased. Hybrid-type meetings combining face-to-face interactions in physical venues and remote access are strongly recommended as the new standard. To reform the work style of physicians, a new standard for academic meetings should be discussed urgently.
