Under the General Rules for Clinical and Pathological Records of Lung Cancer, 8th edition, published by the Japan Lung Cancer Society in 2017, pulmonary neuroendocrine tumours were classified into the four histological classifications of small cell carcinoma (SCLC), large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC), atypical carcinoid (AC), and typical carcinoid (TC). Diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH) was newly classified as a preinvasive lesion. This paper describes the transition in the classification of neuroendocrine tumours of the lung, histological types, tumour characteristics, and tumour gene mutations. The proliferative lesions of neuroendocrine cells and the nomenclature for biopsy specimens of neuroendocrine tumours are also discussed.
