TRAUMA MANAGEMENT TRAINING IN THE CURRICULUM FOR BOARD-CERTIFIED SURGEONS IN JAPAN

Department of Acute Critical Care and Disaster Medicine, Tokyo Medical and Dental University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Tokyo, Japan

Yasuhiro Otomo

The goals and objectives of “trauma management” in the training curriculum for board-certified surgeons of the Japan Surgical Society are appropriately written in terms of the trauma management ability that a surgeon should acquire. On the other hand, the descriptions of the surgical skills to ensure this ability were previously summarized as “10 operations on organ injuries.” However, in actuality, the majority of board-certified surgeon applicants completed the NCD registration with “10 skin sutures.” To improve this situation, the Committee on the Board-Certified Surgeon Program changed “10 operations on organ injuries” to “10 points of trauma management training” in January 2016 and put the new criteria into practice for board-certified surgeon applicants in 2016. I explain the concrete contents of the revised training curriculum and their purpose in detail and introduce the present conditions of trauma management training for US surgery residents.
