THE ADVANCED SURGICAL SKILLS FOR EXPOSURE IN TRAUMA (ASSET) COURSE
Because of a decline in the number of trauma patients requiring operative interventions in Japan, implementing a novel off-the-job training program is important for surgical trainees to maintain their surgical knowledge and skills in trauma. It has also been reported that, in the United States, the number of operative trauma case logs for general surgery residents has decreased significantly since the inception of resident duty-hour rules in 2003. The Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) course is a one-day, case-based, scenario-driven dissection course using fresh human cadavers. This course is designed to provide surgical trainees and practicing surgeons with operative experience, particularly in dissection and exposure to vascular structures in the neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities. Previous literature showed a positive impact of the ASSET course on self-reported comfort levels of course students in performing trauma procedures. In 2016, the first ASSET course was conducted in Japan. Further evaluation of the Japanese ASSET course is warranted in the future.
