JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION : CURRENT CLINICAL PRACTICE AND ETHICS FOR PATIENTS WHO REFUSE BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan

Shiori Kawasaki

There are currently no standardized clinical measures to be followed when Jehovah’s Witnesses refuse blood transfusions. A thorough understanding of the current circumstances is required to resolve this issue. By comparing the interview responses by Jehovah’s Witnesses and the perspectives of medical providers, it was suggested that there is an underlying problem that cannot be resolved solely by respecting patients’ rights, medical guidelines, and the legal framework, and that addressing the issue based on clinical ethics may lead to a mutual understanding between Jehovah’s Witnesses and healthcare providers.
