ROLE OF LIVE DEMONSTRATION IN OPEN ABDOMINAL SURGERY

Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, Japan

Takeshi Sano

In contrast to laparoscopic surgery where anyone can view the identical video image seen by the surgeon, open abdominal surgery requires special settings to demonstrate the procedure to others. Live demonstration has played an important educational role since the beginning of modern surgery, but its style has changed drastically with the development of video recording systems. To enhance the unique advantages of live demonstrations of open abdominal surgery, special attention should be paid to the selection of patients, disease type, and operative methods, while trying to minimize any negative effects on patients.
