PROBLEMS IN SURGICAL TREATMENT OF CARCINOMA OF THE STOMACH IN GERIATRIC PATIENTS

Recently operations of geriatric patients have been increasing due to the increasing ratio of older people in the total population and the higher frequercy of cancer in the aged.
We studied 3,693 cases of gastric cancer operated on in the surgical department of the Cancer Institute Hospital from 1965 through 1980.
Five hundred and Twenty-three cases (14.2%) were over the age of 70 years. From the analysis of these cases we obtained following conclusions.
1) Recently the ratios of gastric patients undergoing operative procedure have increased about 20%.
2) Multiple gastric cancer and primary double cancer in the stomach and other organs were observed more than 20% in the gastric patients.
3) Post operative complications and 30-day operative mortality rate have decreased and curative resection have become quite safe operation.
4) Long-term (5 years) survival rate has been improved in the absolute curative operation.
