Thiry-four cases undergoing limited resection for the surgical treatment of primary cancer were clinically reviewed and also experimental study was done to clarify the efficacy of limited resection of the lung with respect to postoperative cardiopulmonary function and immune response to the lymph nodes.
1) Limited resection of the lung for primary lung cancer is indicated for the tumors of less than 3cm in diameter located in the periphery of the lung because of a less frequency of lymph node involvement.
2) This procedures are effective in avoidance of postoperative cardiopulmonary crisis in the old and in maintenance of good performance status.
3) As evidenced by experimental study, preference of tumor resection brings prolonged survival and enhanced immune response to the lymph nodes.
In conclusion, limited resection of the lung allows better survival, maintaining a well functioning lung in some restrictive use.
