In sixty patients of the extraperitoneal rectal cancer underwent radical excision “the minimal width” between the deepest intramural carcinomatous infiltration and the external surgical margin was measured histologically on each patient. Investigation was made if there is any correlation between “the minimal width” and the local recurrence and following results were obtained.
1) In 40% of cases (24/60) “the minimal width” was identified at the bottom of the creater. 2) In 60% of cases (36/60) “the minimal width” was identified at the deepest intramural carcinomatous infiltration. 3) “the minimal wsidth” was significantly shorter in 12 cases with local recurrence than in 25 cases without it. Local recurrence was occured in 80% of cases in which "the minimal width" was less than 1 mm. 4) In cases that “the minimal width” was more than 6 mm, no local recurrence was recognized.
