Studies on the beneficial effects of nonsurgical closure of P.D.A. proposed by Porstmann were carried out in 86 cases from methodological and prognostic points of view.
Results were summarized as follows.
1) No thoracotomy is necessary to close P.D.A. with the plug and only minor stresses such as local or spinal anesthesia are required.
2) A single catheter technique makes whole procedure simpler and less time conse ming so becomes easily applied to infants.
3) This procedure can be done without supplementary means such as C-P bypass so that the most beneficical effect is given to the highly risky, old or reentranced patient.
4) This procedure should come the first choice of treatment of P.D.A. because it requires no special post-operative care and can be done on heart catheterization.
