OUR POLICY FOR THE TREATMENT OF CARCINOMA OF THE ESOPHAGUS ACCORDING TO TYPES CLASSIFIED BY X-RAY FINDINGS
Present report was attempted to classify carcinoma of the esophagus into several types according to radiological abnormalities and to elucidate the correlation between these classified types and extension of the tumor and prognosis of the patients.
Radiological abnormalities were classified into following 7 types; Ia, Ib, Ic, II, IIIb, IIId, and IV. Distant metastasis occurred more often in type Ia, Ib, Ic and IIIb than the others. Prognosis was relatively good in type Ia, whereas it was absolutely poor in Ib and Ic. Type II invaded loccaly and deeply, and had less distant metastasis, but prognosis of this type was excellent. Prognosis in type IIId and IV was absolutely poor, but in some type IIId, if their stage was not aggravated, longterm survival more than 10 years could be anticipated.
Therefore, immediately postoperative chemotherapy against distant metastatic type (Ia, Ib, Ic,IIIb), and radiation therapy against lacal extension type (II, IIId, IV) were recommended.
