Report on the annual meeting
LONG-TERM FOLLOWUP STUDY OF POSTOPERATIVE PATIENTS WITH HIRSCHSPRUNG'S DISEASE
Since 1953, both Swenson's operation and modified Duhamel's operation have been performed on the patients with Hirschsprung's disease in our affiliated hospitals. Among those postoperative patients, 82 patients after Swenson's operation and 54 patients after modified Duhamel's operation were evaluated for long-term results by means of incidence of postoperative complications, bowel habits, anorectal manometry, defecography, postoperative growth and development and their sexual function.
Results are as follows:
1) The postoperative complications were more frequently seen in the patients after Swenson's operation than in the patients after modified Duhamel's operation.
2) In evaluations by anorectal manometry, defecography, bowel habits and postoperative growth and development, most of the postoperative patients after either of these operations showed good results and there were no significant differences between those two operations.
3) Ten matured patients older than 17 years (male: 7 female: 3) all reported to be satisfied with their sexual activities.
