LONG-TERM RESULTS IN TREATMENT OF ANORECTAL MALFORMATIONS
Patients with anorectal malformations, especially anorectal agenesis, have many difficult problems on defecation after surgery. After 1960, we have performed anoplasty to preserve entegrity of the levator muscle. These procedures developed more improvement of defecational results than previous procedures, but we have about 30% of patients with fair results and 10% with poor results. Accurate objective assessment of the defecational function in unsatisfactory cases will be able to develop further improvement of treatment. The correlation of the clinical and manometric assessment of continence was investigated in subjects after surgery for anorectal anomalies by manometric study.
In 24 patients who had inadequate levator muscle function, levatorplasty was performed more than 4 yr after the primary operation. Eighteen patients showed improvement in defecational function after the operation.
