RESECTION AND RECONSTRUCTION OF THE CARINA
In 7 cases we performed reconstructive operation following carinal resection of the trachea.
Lesions in these cases included bronchogenic carcinoma in 5 cases, sarcoma in lung in one case and the tracheal invasion from thyroid carcinoma in one case.
In 3 cases a new carina was created by anastomosing the trachea with the left main brcnchus and the right intermediate trunk after resecting the right upper lobe, the lower part of the trachea, the carina and the right main bronchus.
In 4 cases the trachea and the left main bronchus was anastomosed in end to end fashion to create a new air way after resecting the right lung, the lower part of the trachea and the carina.
Of these 7 cases there were 2 operative deaths and another death due to acute heart failure in one case.
The other 4 patients are well 4 months, 3 years 6 months, 3 years 8 months and 7 years respectively after the operation.
