COMBINED EVALUATION OF SERUM GLYROPROTEIN TEST AND ENDOSCOPIC ASPIRATION BIOPSY IN DIAGNOSIS OF CARCINOMA OF THE PANCREAS
Serum glycoproteins (prealbumin, α
1-antitrypsin, α
1-acid glycoprotein, transferrin and haptoglobin) were measured in 146 patients with either pancreatic, hepatic or biliary tract disease.
Four criteria were set forth for serological diagnosis of glycoproteins, namely, malignant pattern, malignancy suspected, borderline and no malignancy.
Out of the 146, 16 patients with pancreatic diseases received pre-operative endoscopic aspiration biopsies.
"Malignant pattern" or "malignancy suspected" was diagnosed in 25 of 31 patients with proven pancreatic cancer. There was a false negative in 6 cases (20%). But, endoscopic aspiration biopsies were positive in 2 of the 5 false negative cases. Thus, the pre-operative correct diagnosis of malignancy was made in 27 of the 31 patients (90%) with cacinoma of the pancreas when endoscopic aspiration biopsy was added to the glycoprotein test.
Of 17 patients with carcinoma of the pancreas underwent curative operations, 12 were proven to have malignant disease by combining the glycoprotein test with the endoscopic aspiration biopsy.
From these results, combined use of both procedures should be extremely beneficial in obtaining a early diagnosis of carcinoma of the pancreas.
