STUDIES ON THE IMMUNE STATUS IN PATIENTS WITH GASTRIC AND COLORECTAL CANCER
To investigate the immune status of patients affected by gastro-intestinal cancer, a variety of tests were carried out in 265 patients with gastric and 247 with colo-rectal cancer at regular intervals in each clinical stage. The tests adopted were peripheral lymphocyte counts, serum immunoglobulin levels, serum complement (CH
50), phytohemagglutinin (PHA) skin reactivity, peripheral lymphocytic transformation stimulated with PHA and concanavalin-A (Con A), and peripheral lymphocyte subpopulation (percentage of T cells, percentage of B cells, percentage of IgG-Fc receptor positive T cells). The results were as follows :
1) The PHA skin reactivity and the response of T cell to mitogen PHA and Con A diminished gradually corresponding with the advance of the diseases. (p<0.01)
2) Serum IgG and serum CH
50 levels were distributed in a wide range of value in every clinical stage. They tended to increase in the advanced stage. Serum CH
50 levels decreased in the preterminal stage. (p<0.01)
3) Percentage of lgG-Fc receptor positive T cells increased corresponding with the advance of clinical stage. (p<0.01)
4) Serum IgM, IgA levels, percentage of T cell and B cell did not change throughout.
5) The PHA skin reactivity correlated significantly with the rate of lymphocytic transformation stimulated with PHA and Con A. (p<0.01)
6) Percentage of IgG-Fc receptor positive T cell changed reciprocal to PHA skin reactivity and the rate of lymphocytic transformation with PHA. This phenomenon was observed in every stage. (p<0.01, p<0.05)
7) The ratio of T cell transformation with Con A to that with PHA (Con A/PHA) were in significant correlation with the percentage of IgG-Fc receptor positive T cells. The IgG-Fc receptor positive T cells which increased in gastric and colorectal cancer patients are assumed to be a kind of supressor T cell.
