STUDIES ON TUMOR-SPECIFIC CELL-MEDIATED IMMUNITY IN CANCER PATIENTS USING A MIXED LYMPHOCYTE-TUMOR CELL CULTURE REACTION
PART II. CORRELATION BETWEEN MLTR AND NON-SPECIFIC IMMUNOLOGICAL REACTIVITY AND PROGNOSIS

Fifty-six cancer patients were studied on their tumor specific immunological reactivity using a mixed lymphocyte-tumor cell culture reaction (MLTR). In this paper, correlation between MLTR and non specific immunological reactivity and prognosis was reported. The following results were obtained :
1) Positive blasstogenic responses in MLTR were observed in 15 of 56 cancer patients.
2) MLTR was well related to DNCB skin test (P<0.001), but not to PPD or PHA skin tests.
3) Peripheral lymphocyte count was not significantly related to MLTR. However, lymphocyte count was more than 2,000/mm3 in 10 of 12 positive cases for MLTR.
4) Serum immunoglobulin level was not related to MLTR .
5) In gastric cancer patients, positive blastogenic responses were observed in 1 of 8, 4 of 11 and 3 of 20 patients, in stage I+ II, stage III and stage IV, respectively.
6) In non-curative cases, a significant correlation was indicated between MLTR and prognosis (r=0.782, P<0.001).
Finally, it was suggested that the intensity of tumor specific immune response was related to general immunocompetence and prognosis.
