REHABILITATION OF PATIENTS AFTER TOTAL OR PROXIMAL GASTRECTOMY FOR GASTRIC CANCER
On 118 patients (total gastrectomy 84 cases and proximal gastrectomy 34 cases) more than 6 months after total or proximal gastrectomy for gastric cancer, the factors influencing on their rehabilitation were evaluated by the reconstruction methods.
In the patients after total or proximal gastrectomy, each rate of the reinstatement was 88.1 and 70.6%, respectively, in one year after operation. The rate in the totaly gastrectmized patients was higher than that (81.4%) in the patients after distal gastrectomy and the patients after proximal gastrectomy showed the lowest rate.
The amount of diet, which was influenced by such postoperative complaints as dumping syndrome and esophagitis, seemed to be a most important factor being concerned in the rehabilitation.
From these results, the operation method for prevention of the postoperative complaints should be devised.
On the other hand, the laboratory findings in the longterm survivors over 5 years after total gastrectomy were generally favourable. In the blood picture, however, hyperchromic anemia was observed in 6 of 24 patients. Furthermore, in 14 of 22 patients or 66.3% a decrease of concentration of blood vitamin B
12 was found. Accordingly, the postoperative management attaching importance to the agastric anemia must be considered over a longterm.
