This report is based on the analysis of the results of the treatment on two groups of patients ; a group of 25 cases operated by orthodox surgical method and a group of 28 cases operated by wide resection method, which was introduced in 1972. To the latter cases immunological studies were carried out pre- and post-operatively.
The survival rate of cases before 1971 was 36 per cent and of the cases after 1972, 54 per cent. Four cases out of 9 survivals in the former group were 2 cases of G.N.B., one in stage 3 and one in stage 4s of Neuroblastoma. The 15 survivals in the latter group were distributed in various stages of tumors as follows : 3 cases in stage 3, 2 cases stage 1, 2 Wilms ; 4 cases out of 8 were solid tumors in soft tissue.
The goal of the cancer therapy of the children is complete extirpation of the tumor wherever possible. Recently, application of patch method for vessels and use of surgical mesh for defects of body wall have been employed by us for the cases in which complete resection of the tumor was feasible. Since this operative method were very positive, it was applied in the more severe cases. Meanwhile, since 1972, the immunological back ground of the patients have been assessed using P.P.D reaction and T-B lymphocyte subpopulation studies id patients undergoing postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We feel that both factors described above will contribute to get a better survival rate.
