LIVER FUNCTION IN GASTRIC CANCER
FIRST REPORT. PREOPERATIVE RESULTS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE EXTENT OF CANCER SPREADS

Prof. M. Mnto's Surgical Clinic, Tohoku University, Sendai

Kazuhiko INOUE

Liver function tests (Meulengracht's index, thymol turbidity and zinc sulfate tests, sublimate reaction and bromsulphalein test) were carried out in 104 cases subjected to operation for gastric cancer. The results were studied for their relation with various aspects of the lesion. For comparison, similar tests were performed in 39 cases with peptic ulcer of the stomach or duodenum.
The results are as follows :
1. Cases with the impaired liver function were found more commonly in the cancer cases than in the ulcer cases.
2. The impairment of the liver function in gartric cancer was somewaht more marked in cases with hepatic metastasis as compared with those without the metastasis.
3. The liver function was revealed to be most severely impaired in cases with the extensive peritoneal dissemination and in those with the remarkable lymph-nodal involvement, that is, in cases with the manifest evidence of the cancer spreads.
4. The larger the tumor, the more marked was the disturbances in the liver function, while the latter was not closely dependent upon the morphological―whether gross or microscopic―structures of the tumor.
