AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON EDEMA OF BRAINS, LUNGS, STOMACHS AND INTESTINES-USING SODIUM ALGINATE OF LOWER POLYMERISATION, A NEW PLASMA EXPANDER, INJECTED INTRAVENOUSLY TO THE DOGS.

The Second Surgical Clinic, Kyushu University Medical School. (Director: Prof. M. Tomoda)

Takayoshi HARASAWA

Sodium alginate, dissolved in 5% dextrose and 0.3% saline mixed aqueous solution, the degree of polymerisation of alginate used being settled constant (Intrinsic viscosity about 0.062 litre/gram) was given intravenously to adult dogs in a dose of 25 cc per kg of body weight and the animals thus treated were killed after a certain number of days for examtnation of their brain, Jung, stomach and intestine.
By histological examination, edema and pathological changes of the brain, lung, stomach and intestine were not found.
By measuring the quantity of water by drying the tissues, I found the quantity of water in the brain and lung were in normal state.
