STUDIES ON THE VASOMOTOR ACTIVITY IN NORMAL AND PATHLOGICAL STATES
REPORT Ⅰ: VOLUME PULSE AND VASOMOTOR REFLEXES IN NORMAL SUBJECTS

The volume pulse and vasomotor reflexes in the finger-tips on both sides have been studied on 38 normal subjects by means of simultaneous bilateral recording with two photoelectricplethysmographs (from Sept. 20, to Nov. 20, 1955; the room temperature being 21℃).
A. Volume pulse :
1) Normal range of the volume-pulse amplitude is relatively fixed.
2) Certain characteristics of volume pulse waves according to age are found, but there is no significant difference of amplitude between the right and left waves of the digital volume pulse.
3) In some instances, the periodic undulation of volume pulse concordant with rcspiratory cycle is found to be not always symmetrical in most instances, the right side shows such undulation and the left does not. It is probably due to the anatomical asymmetry of large veins. On the right side, intra-thoracic or intra-abdominal pressure will more directly affect the peripheral circulation than on the left.
B. Vasomotor reflexes :
Vascular responses to various stimuli are observed. 1) The application of drops of cold water on the dorsum of the hand, loud noise (surprising stimuli), pain (stinging lightly with a needle), deep-breathing, mental arithmetic and recalling memory, are regularly followed by a definite vasoconstrictor reflex after a certain latent period.
2) Following the immersion of a hand in hot water (42°C, for 1 minute), the increase of volume-pulse ensues.). But there are definite individual differences in the occurrence and duration of the vasodilatation, which manifests itself in 20-60 sec. after the immersion, then continues for 2-5 minutes.
