CLINICAL AND HISTOLOGICAL SPECIALITIES OF THE APPENDICITIS OF CHILDHOOD

1st Surgical Department, Tokyo University School of Medicine

Tadashi KIMURA

1. In the Shimizu Surgical Clinic, 158 cases of appendicitis of childhood younger than 15 years were studied clinically and pathologically.
2. The clinical study showed that the author's result was fairly similar to those of other authors. However, the abdominal pain initiates from the ileocecal region in slight cases, upper abdominal region in medium cases and abdomen in general in severe cases.
3. Because development of the omentum majus is insufficient among children, diffuse peritonitis may occur rather easily in cases of perforation.
4. Comparing the body length, the appendix is not so long.
5. Postoperative progress is remarkably favorable
6. Inflammation was observed histologically in all cases diagnosed and operated as appendicitis. Sever change may rapidly occur in cases of appendicitis of childhood. Since there are many cases in which partial change rapidly spread to the deeper structures, operation must be performed as early as possible if diagnosis is settled.
7. There is a close hereditary factor in appendicitis of childhood.
