A STUDY OF POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE ACROSS THE STOMACH WALL
PART 2. CIRCUMSTANCES BRINGING ABOUT POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE ACROSS THE STOMACH WALL
The cause of the potential difference (P.D.) across the stomach wall was inquired into in dog stomachs in situ and frog stomachs extirpated, with the results below.
1. The fact that in living dog stomachs the P.D. across the stomach wall disappeared with cesation of the blood circulation and was reduced under severe anoxia, made it presumable that change in the function and other biological activities of the stomach mucosa might be closely related to change in the P.D. across the stomach wall.
2. The fact that in extirpated frog stomachs the P.D. across the stomach wall was reduced with cessation of oxygen supply and with a drop in temperature, led to the assumption that a change in the metabolic activity of the stomach mucosa might be closely related to a change in the P.D. across the stomach wall.
3. Experimental corrosion of dog stomach mucosa with nitric acid made it conceivable that the superficial epithelium might be deeply concerned in the changes HCl produces in the P.D. across the stomach wall.
