From the data on pulmonary arterial and venous blood gas analysis at the opened thorax, the following results have been obtained.
1) In the artificial pneumothorax cases, the functions of the lungs have been considerably preserved, and also in the pathoIogic findings the lungs have been littIe collapsed.
2) In cases of atelectasis, the functions of the lungs have been lost completely, and then in the pulmonary venous blood oxygen has been reduced compared with in the pulmonary arterial blood but carbon dioxide has been increased.
From these findings it seems that there are shunts between pulmonary vesseIs and bronchial arteries.
The shunts have been confirmed by the celluloid casts.
3) In cases of thoracoplasty, the results have been irregular, and the functions of the collapsed lungs have been almost Iost.
According to the pathological findings the upper Iobes have been collapsed enough.
Especially the apical and posterior segments have been enough, but the anterior and lingual segments have been not so enough.
4) Even in cases of thoracoplasty, the functions of the middle lobes have been preserved.
The pathological findings of the right middle Iobes correspond to that of the left lingual segments.
