A STUDY ON THE STELLATE GANGLION BLOCK
PART 2. ANIMAL EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
Previously, the author reported that setellate ganglion block for intracranial pathologic states suspected to be associated with cerebral circulatory disturbances, showed favorable results. Since then the author performed a few animal experimental studies of cats in order to explain the mechanism of this treatment and the foIIowing results were obtained.
1. It was noted that faradic slimulation of cervical sympathetic nerves caused ipsilateral constriction of the pial arteries and that transsected cervical sympathetic nerve, steIIectomy or stellate ganglion block wilh novocain caused ipsilateral dilatalion of the pial arteries.
2. SteIIectomy and stellate ganglion block wilh rovocain caused ipsilatral dilatalion of capillary bed of the cerebrebral cortex.
3. From the above-mentionend results obtained, it is clarified that the cervical sympathetic nerve and stellate ganglion play an active vasonstictor role in the intrinsic contral of cerebral circulation and that the bloking of the cervical sympatheic nerve or stellate ganglion cause an incrase in the cerebral blood flow due to the decrease cerebral vascular tone and dilated cerebral vessels.
The author confirmed from these findings and the clinical experiments to be published that clinical favorable results in steIlate block were derived from avove-mentioned improvement of brain circulation.
