FALL IN BLOOD PRESSURE DUE TO TRACTION ON THE INTESTINES AND ITS PREVENTION-AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE MECHANISIM.
By analysing, neuropysiologically, the fact that a fall in blood pressure occurs by the handling of intestines, especially by traction on the intestines during laparotomies, an experimental study using mostly rabbits was performed to clarify the mechanism and therefore come upon a solution to this problem. The results were as follows.
1. The fall of blood pressure during laparotomy is not due to laparotomy itself, but is a reflex due to traction on the intestines. It differed clearly from hypotension resulting from vasodilatation of the lower extremities due to spinal anesthesia.
2. In this fall of blood pressure the reflex arc of the vasomotor center level of the spinal cord and brain stem does not play the leading role. It occurs through the prosencephalic and cerebellar higher arc. The prosencephalic and cerebellar levels are antagonistic, but the projective center of the forebrain is predominant.
3. To prevent this fall in blood pressure, an attempt to make the pressor center active was made, but the results were poor. Prosencephalic anesthetics-barbiturates-were able to prevent this fall in pressure to a greater degree by depressing the action of the prosencephalic level. (author's abstract)
