AN HISTOLOGICAL OBSERVATION ON THE LIVER IN THE RABBIT WITH THE VAGUS ON EITHER SIDE CUT RIGHT UNDER THE DIAPHRAGM.
The vagus on either side was cut right under the diaphragm and the cosequent changes in the mitochondria and isoelectric points of the liver cells were investigated in the rabbit. The following was the result obtained :
1) The changes in the mitochondria brought about by the operation were most marked on the 20 th postoperative day, and becoming slighter later on, were indetectable on the 50 th and the 90 th day after the operation.
2) The isoelectric points of both the nucleus and cytoplasm showed an alkaline shift after the operation. The shift was most marked on the 30 th postoperative day in the cytoplasm and on the 30 th and 40 th postoperative days in the nuclei. Hardly any shift was observable in either the cytoplasm or the nucleus on the 50 th and 90 th days after the operation.
3) The result of the foregoing observation made it clear that the mitochondria of the liver cells and the isoelectric points of the liver cells which are subject to change after the operation are restored to normal on the 50 th postoperative day.
