EFFICACY OF LIVE DEMONSTRATIONS IN ENDOSCOPIC SURGERY

Department of General and Gastroenterological Surgery, Osaka Medical College, Takatsuki, Japan

Junji Okuda

One of the advantages of endoscopic surgery is that a high-quality view of the operative field can be shared not only with the surgical team but also with observers. One of its disadvantages is that it is more difficult than open surgery. In addition, there are several problems in safely performing live demonstration surgery, such as ethical issues and stress on the surgeon and surgical team. However, recently many believe that all forms of medical treatment including surgery should be demonstrated publicly. Live demonstration surgery is effective from the viewpoint of education as well as confirming the quality of the surgical procedure. Therefore, live demonstrations of endoscopic surgery are expected to become useful, effective educational tools.
